The Story of Joel Goodhart's Tri-State Wrestling Alliance

ECW had its origins beginning in the year 1989 when a promoter named Joel Goodhart opened up Tri-State Wrestling Alliance. The TWA ran the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area and used such names as The Rockin' Rebel, Tony Stetson, Johnny Hotbody, Larry Winters, JT Smith, The Sandman and Terry Funk. He also used legends such as Abdullah The Butcher, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Tully Blanchard, Paul Orndorff, Bob Orton, Jr., Kerry and Kevin Von Erich and Bam Bam Bigelow.

Goodhart ran shows from 1989-1992 when he sold the company over to a Philadelphia Pawn Shop owner by the name of Tod Gordon. Gordon had been helping Goodhart as a sort of financer for his shows and Gordon was a wrestling fan himself and decided when Goodhart shut down he might as well start up his own promotion since he was financing the TWA for the most part anyways. Thus began Eastern Championship Wrestling, which later morphed into Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1994 after they double crossed the National Wrestling Alliance.
