Greatest ECW Moments: Terry Funk Wins The ECW World Championship At ECW's First Pay-Per-View (ECW Barely Legal) - April 13th, 1997

Terry Funk Wins The ECW World Heavyweight Championship at ECW's First PPV Event, Barely Legal - April 13th, 1997:

What a way to give back to the legend of the business than by crowning him as ECW World Heavyweight Champion during ECW's first ever pay-per-view event, Barely Legal in 1997. Funk had been with ECW since the start and helped to elevate every single wrestler he stepped in the ring with and gave advice to the rookies behind the scenes as a mentor and this was Paul Heyman's "thank you" for everything that he did for the company. As Heyman said so passionately on the 'Barely Legal speech', "Thank Terry Funk for all he's done for this company. For help putting us on the map! For being unselfish in selfish times! For taking the young guys and showing them a better way! Tonight, we have a chance to say, "Yeah, you're right, we're too extreme; we're too wild; we're too out of control; we're too full of our own shit!" Or we have the chance to say "Hey, Fuck you, you're wrong! Fuck you, we're right!""

During the Barely Legal weekend, the night before the big show, ECW hosted a dinner for Funk and had a small ceremony. In September ECW co-produced the Terry Funk's WrestleFest show in his hometown of Amarillo, which featured in the main event Funk facing then-WWF superstar Bret "Hitman" Hart in the main event. Funk was proclaimed the "ECW World Heavyweight Champion for life" by Paul Heyman during WrestleFest 1997 on September 11th, 1997.
