Today in ECW History - June 12th
Wrestler birthday(s): Jerry Lynn turns 60 years old today. Lynn would sign with the WWE in 2001 following ECW's closure and would win the WWE Light Heavyweight Championship in his debut match, holding the title for 37 days before loosing it to Jeff Hardy. He would leave WWE less than a year after he signed and would show up for the World Wrestling All-Stars promotion in Australia, which had a couple pay-per-views back in 2002-2003. He would win a tournament to crown a new WWA International Cruiserweight Champion after AJ Styles had to vacate the title. The title would be unified with TNA's X-Division Championship in 2003 when Chris Sabin defeated Lynn. Lynn would be a key player in TNA Wrestling's X Division when the promotion got off the ground in 2002 and was the third-ever X-Division Champion, winning the title from Low Ki on NWA TNA's 11th weekly pay-per-view event. Following his release from TNA in 2007, he made appearances in Ring of Honor Wrestling, where he would win the ROH World Championship in 2009 after he defeated Nigel McGuinness. He would loose the title to Austin Aries in a match also involving Tyler Black (Seth Rollins). He received the 2009 Comeback of the Year from Pro Wrestling Illustrated for his ROH stint. He would make his return to TNA in 2010, where he planned to compete at the ECW tribute show TNA HardCore Justice on August 8th, 2010, but was pulled from the event at the last minute. He would return in 2011 to have a match against his most famous foe, Rob Van Dam at TNA's Destination X 2011 pay-per-view event. Lynn would retire in 2013 but would make his return to ROH where he worked as a backstage agent/producer. In 2019 he would sign with All Elite Wrestling under the same sort of role. In 2023 it was announced he would be somewhat of an on screen authority figure for the Ring of Honor TV show since AEW's Tony Khan purchased the company.
Jimmy Jannetty turns 51 years old today. Jannetty worked a very brief stint in ECW but has the distinction of having wrestled in the first match in ECW's history where he fought Stevie Richards to a time limit draw on February 25th, 1992 at ECW Market Street Mayhem.
