The former ECW World Heavyweight Champion and legend of the wrestling business Terry Funk recently celebrated his 79th birthday and did so in style!
Back on Friday, June 30th, the legendary Hardcore Hall of Fame inductee generated some significant online buzz as the pro wrestling community expressed their admiration for the influential figure of hardcore wrestling. His name was trending in a big way and fans all remembered the legend and the moments he has provided in his time on this earth.
A photo of the Funker alongside his birthday cake has recently surfaced and you can see said photo above. Along with a collection of tweets showering him with love, Terry Funk had a big smile on his face.
It is safe to say that Terry Funk is hands-down the single most UNSELFISH person in a business full of selfish people. If it wasn't for his contributions to ECW in the early days, it's safe to say this website wouldn't exist and neither would have Extreme Championship Wrestling. What he did in the early days of ECW was something he certainly didn't have to do. But the fact is, HE DID!
Funk was already a known name by the time he reached ECW in 1993. He could have retired and went home to the Double Cross Ranch and never been seen again but instead he took the skills he learned and passed them on to the next generation of talent - the Sabu's and Shane Douglas' and Tommy Dreamer's of the world. In turn, his selfless actions inspired a whole generation of talent that would be the backbone of ECW as it grew into the #3 promotion in the United States.
That is why it was so fitting for Funk to have main evented the very first ECW pay-per-view back in April of 1997, because it was ECW's way of saying "Thank You!" to the legend that helped put them on the map and helped teach the young guys a better way. The wrestling world will no doubt be very sad when the day comes and Funk passes away. It will be a sad day no doubt. Because no matter if you liked his in-ring work or not, I haven't ever heard a single person say a bad thing about him, and in this business that is unheard of!
